Description:
The Riscos de Chapin in the far distance form the highest point of Gran Canaria’s western highlands at 1771 metres above sea level. The lower formations of these cliffs are composed of successions of lava flows ranging from alcaline basalts, basanites and tephrites, that were emitted from the Roque Nublo stratovolcano sometime between 4.6 and 3.9 million years ago. These are overlain by breccia-type pyroclastic deposits composed of an ignimbrite of trachy-phonolitic composition that were emitted later between 3.9 and 3.5 million years ago, from the same volcano, during a period when explosive vulcanian-phreatomagmatic eruptions took place. The cliffs have taken their present form from extensive erosion and successive large scale avalanches. Buried below the cliffs are the remains of the much older Caldera de Tejeda.
