Description:
Whilst much of the summital areas of Gran Canaria’s highlands are covered almost exclusively by pine forests, at slightly lower altitudes, the north facing slopes are very rich in a great diversity of vegetation, fruit trees and rich agricultural valleys, this owing to the moist north east trade winds which bing abundant cloud, mist and raindfall almost all year round. One of the most abundant trees to grow within this cloud belt is the sweet chestnut, this is an image of a small forest of these trees located at the uppermost part of the Barranco (canyon) de la Virgin close to the Pinos de Galdar pine forest at around 1350 metres above sea level.
