Description:
The spectacular Roque Bentaiga (centre of the image) stands at the eastern end of the canyon lands of western Gran Canaria, above the town of Tejeda and is one of a number of volcanic monoliths to be found on the island. The Roque Bentaiga is composed of the highly eroded remains of breccia-type pyroclastic deposits and lava flows that were emitted from the Roque Nublo stratovolcano, between 4.6 and 3.0 million years ago. The dome shaped ground below Roque Bentaiga is the focal point of a previously emplaced cone sheet swarm that lasted from 11.7 to 7.3 million years ago and which caused a structural uplift of the previously emplaced volcanic and erosive materials which had re filled the Caldera de Tejeda between 14.1 and 9 million years ago. In the background behind Roque Bentaiga is the table shaped Mesa de Acusa, which stands above the impressive canyon known as the Barranco de La Aldea. On the horizon is the island of Tenerife.
