Description:
This is a typical view of the remote, rugged and almost unpopulated mountainous area of the extreme south west of Gran Canaria, an area where very little rain falls and where the oldest rock formations of the island are to be found. These mountains are largely composed of highly eroded Miocene Basaltic lavas that formed the original shield volcano that was to become Gran Canary and were emplaced between 14.5 and 14.1 million years ago. This image is of the Barranco de Tasarte with the village of Tasarte located in the upper valley.
