Description:
General view of the Barranco (canyon) de Tirajana located in the south of Gran Canaria. The canyon is one of the oldest and largest to be found on the island of Gran Canaria, its origins dating back over 10 million years. It has been carved by the erosive forces of water and has changed position many times as subsequent volcanic eruptions emitted lava and pyroclastic flows that were to refill the earlier canyons, only to be subsequently carved out again and again. The present canyon has taken its shape during the last 3 million years, since there have been no volcanic eruptions in this area within this period.
