Description:
During long periods of volcanic inactivity, erosion begins to break down the volcanic rocks producing new and fertile layers of soil. If this soil is then covered by a new lava flow, the result is that the soil is literally cooked or baked by the tremendous heat of the lava. This image is taken within a small canyon along the road from Aguimes to Temisasis where a more recent lava flow has flowed over and ‘cooked’ a layer of soil to a bright red colour. This is a very common sight around the island of Gran Canaria.
