Description:
Nepheline-basanite lava flow with columnar jointing in the bottom of the Barranco del Draguillo, located in eastern Gran Canaria. The lava is from the lower Post Roque Nublo cycle, (3.1 – 1.5 my) a period when a resurgence in volcanic activity originating from a series of deep seated fractures, or dorsal rift, running for 23 km from Berrezales in the NW to the Barranco de Guayadeque in the SE, emitted very large amounts of lava flows consisting of nephelinites and basanites largely burying the older miocene and pliocene rocks to the north, north east and east of the island. Its exact date and point of emission are unknown. The lava has had a chemical analysis and is classed as a foidite, however the analysis can not separately identify the nepheline content to the plagioclase owing to the fact that their crystallization is diffuse, this rock have been classed as a nepheline-basanite.
