Description:
Weathered Peridotite nodules and abundant olivine phenocrysts within a rock sample of melilite nephelite, from a lava flow overlying Roque Nublo breccia, which has cascaded down a slope into the Barranco Tirajana, subdividing into smaller flow units. The thin flows totaling around 6 metres thickness, are found along the road between Sardina and Santa Lucia and carry abundant Peridotite nodules, dominantly that of spinel Lherzolites, harzburgites and lesser amounts of pyroxenites. A similar occurance is found along the road from Santa Lucia to Temisas. The lava flow is believed to have originated from eruptive centres at Los Pechos (1800 m altitude) close to Pico de Las Nieves, where there are nodule bearing scoria cones, these being of post Roque Nublo age and are known as the Los Pechos formation dated as between 1.5 and 1.8 million years old. Melilite-nephelinite is of a very rare type of lava of ultra-basic composition and of very low silica content and very high in Magnesium, having undergone no differentiation at all during its rise to the surface. SiO2 – 38.70%, Al2O3 – 7.60%, Fe2O3 – 4.60%, FeO – 7.30, MgO – 21.48%, CaO – 10.97%, Na2O – 2.47%, K2O – 0.93%, MnO – 0.18%, TiO2 – 2.71, P2O5 – 1.08%, H2O – 0.70%. CO2 – 0.41
