Close up image of the highly evolved and strongly phyric, alkaline hauyne-phonolite rock, from a small igneous intrusive dome, approximately 1 Km east of the village of Artenara and on the edge of the Riscos de Chapin erosive escarpment, reaching an altitude of 1486 metres. There are a significant number of intrusions to be found on the island of Gran Canaria, forming part of the Roque Nublo volcano’s Tenteniguada Formation. These intrusions formed more or less around the periphery of the statovolcano’s central emission area, in the centre of the island and represent the culmination of two separate periods of geochemical differentiation of its magmas, the first between 3.9 and 3.8 million years ago, marking the beginning of a period when the volcano’s activity was to become dominated by highly explosive eruptions and the second between 3.1 and 2.7 million years ago during the waning stages of the volcano’s activity. The Artenara igneous intrusion has not been dated and may or may not form part of the Roque Nublo cycle, since it is one of a number of igneous intrusions to be found around the periphery of the Tejeda caldera complex and outside of the periphery of the Roque Nublo’s stratocone area. However, this intrusion as are those of Pajonales, one below Roque Bentaiga and another between Cruz Grande and Ayacata are hauyne bearing and chemically resemble those of the Roque Nublo rather than those of the late Miocene phonolites and are therefore most probably of Roque Nublo age. The rock is of a micro-crystaline texture and extremely porphyritic, of a strongly greenish-grey colour. It is very different to other hauyne phonolites of Gran Canaria in that it has a spectacular abundance of both altered and fresh blue hauyne phenocrysts and a very large number of large (1 cm) sanidine crystals. It also has a number of large phenocrysts of augite, and smaller amphibole, biotite, sphene, apatite and Fe/Ti oxides. The matrix is composed largely of alkali feldspar and of the feldspathoid Hauyne, clinopyroxine augite, sphene, apatite, hornblende and biotite.
