Description:
The Morro de Pajonales igneous intrusion is one of a significant number of intrusions to be found on the island of Gran Canaria, forming part of the Roque Nublo volcano’s Tenteniguada Formation. Although the Morro de Pajonales is located further to the south west, most of these intrusions formed more or less around the periphery of the statovolcano’s central emission area, in the centre of the island and represent the culmination of two separate periods of geochemical differentiation of its magmas, the first between 3.9 and 3.8 million years ago, marking the beginning of a period when the volcano’s activity was to become dominated by highly explosive eruptions and the second between 3.1 and 2.7 million years ago during the waning stages of the volcano’s activity. The Morro de Pajonales does not appear to have been dated. This is a close up image of the highly evolved alkaline hauyne-phonolite rock, which forms the Morro de Pajonales igneous intrusion located close to the village of El Juncal in the Pajonales pine forest. The rock is a fine-grained porphyritic rock of a greenish-grey colour. The matrix is composed of the feldspathoid Hauyne and of the clinopyroxine augite, and of sphene, apatite, hornblende, Fe/Ti oxide and biotite. The most prominent phenocrysts (white) are those of alkaline feldspar sanidine and possibly the sodic alkali feldspar anorthoclase, and to a much lesser degree hauyne, this feldspathoid not being very prominent within the Morro de Pajonales rocks and generally unrecognisable, altered to black or dark red. There are also accessory biotite phenocrysts. Hand specimen is very similar to the phonolite of Risco Blanco. SiO2 – 57.20%, Al2O3 – 20.49%, Fe2O3 – 1.33%, FeO – 0.70, MgO – 0.07%, CaO – 0.94%, Na2O – 9.14%, K2O – 6.14%, MnO – 0.26%, TiO2 – 0.21, P2O5 – 0.02%, H2O – 3.20%.
