Description:
Close up image of rhyolite lava VL, dated as 13.97 million years old. This lava, is believed to have been emitted from ring fractures within the Miocene Caldera de Tejeda and having piled up against this caldera wall to then overflow into various ancestral canyons. This may have also been emitted from outside the perimeter of the caldera, since there are two rhyolite dikes of similar composition just the south east of Montaña del Horno, one of which is very large and measuring 8 metres in width, but this is however uncertain. This lava is widespread in the south and south west of Gran Canaria, especially in between the Barranco de Taurito and Barranco de Tasarte, and on the northern slopes of Montaña Hogarzales. It is also well represented within the Barranco de Tirajana and forms the Montaña Carboneras to the east of Tirajana. It however appears to be absent from the Barranco de Arguineguin to the Barranco de Tauro. The lava flows vary in thickness from less than 10 metres, locally thickening to form irregular hills and ridges of between 50 and 100m, this being due to the piling up of the lobes of very viscous lava, within valleys or depressions. The rock varies in colour from light grey, to brownish grey to bluish or pink from one location to another. This image is of a hydrothermally altered sample from within the caldera wall, just below the reservoir in the barranco de Tirajana. The colour of a freshly broken rock is of a dark pink, sometimes with bands of more reddish pink or bluish colour. The lava is a low silica, weakly peralkaline rhyolite, with generally few (less than 3%) anorthoclase phenocrysts. The matrix of the rock is very fine-grained, microcrystalline, composed essentially of anorthoclase, with lesser amounts of clinopyroxene - augite, amphibole, zircon, and traces of plagioclase - oligoclase and contains little or no quartz. Approximate chemical content is as follows; SiO2 – 69.90%, Al2O3 – 14.07%, Fe2O3 – 2.07%, FeO – 1.10%, MgO – 0.27%, CaO – 0.41%, Na2O – 5.71%, K2O – 4.05%, MnO – 0.14%, TiO2 – 0.71%, P2O5 – 0.07%, H2O – 0.70%, CO2 – 0.26%
