Description:
Close up image of trachytic ignimbrite V1, dated as 13.90 million years old. Ignimbrite V1 is an extremely welded ignimbrite that is to be found widely distributed across southern Gran Canaria, usually overlying rhyolitic lava VL as a viscous veneer. This ignimbrite resembles Lava VL in colour, mineral amount and composition, but differs from VL by having a basal vitrophyre, eutaxitic texture and more and more strongly fragmented phenocrysts. It also contains small amounts of intermixed slightly more mafic blebs gradually increasing upwards in volume. A top breccia occurs locally, but more commonly it shows a top vitrophyre and a very smouth top such as at this location. This ignimbrite was emitted from ring fractures within the Miocene Caldera de Tejeda and is one of some 20 cooling units erupted between 14.0 and 13.3 million years ago. This image is of a sample from the western side of Montaña Carboneras along the road from Aguimes to Santa Lucia. The colour is of a very light grey. The ignimbrite is described as being a subalkalic comenditic rhyolite although the chemical analysis places it as a subalkalic trachyte. These rocks of Gran canaria contain no quartz. SiO2 – 67.60%, Al2O3 – 13.93%, Fe2O3 – 2.12%, FeO – 1.64%, MgO –0.52 %, CaO – 0.62%, Na2O – 4.51%, K2O – 3.95%, MnO – 0.22%, TiO2 – 0.83%, P2O5 – 0.13%, H2O – 3.28%, CO2 – 0.09%
