Description:
Bleached Coral, Arabian Gulf. Acropora.sp (Staghorn coral) bleaching or whitening of the coral skeleton is caused by the death of the symbiotic algae known as Zooxanthellae, that lives within the tissue of the coral and gives it its colour. This bleaching can result from many factors, the most common being abnormally warm or cold waters and lack of sunlight. Following the Gulf War in 1991, smoke from the burning Kuwaiti oil wells covered the Arabian gulf for months, reducing sunlight and lowering sea temperatures. This was followed by an exceptionally cold winter with sea temperatures dipping down to only 11º centigrade for almost a week. The result was very widespread coral bleaching, this most notable on Fasht Al Azm reef to the east of Bahrain. The algae is Hydroclathrus clathratus and is usually present accros these reefs in February to April each year.
