Description:
Located along the central Egyptian Red Sea coastline and only 8 miles (13Km) offshore, there is no doubt that Elphinstone is one the most spectacular reefs in the Red Sea. It is a mere ribbon of corals barely breaking the surface, from where, its east and west sides drop away vertically, totally encrusted in the most magnificently coloured corals and sponges. At the north point, hard corals dominate, this most notable nearer the surface. To the south, there is a narrow steeply sloping plateau, where the main features are the soft corals and gorgonians. This drops away to a depth of 130 feet (40 metres), from where, extends a very narrow ledge under which there is a large archway. According to a legend, the sarcophagus of an unknown Pharaoh lies here and indeed it is possible to see the outlines of a strange rectangular shape, at a depth of around 200 feet (60 metres). Fish life is also very rich, there is one however that deserves a special mention, one which is only found in the Red Sea, this being the Golden butterflyfish (Chaetodon semilarvatus) pictured above. These beautiful bright yellow fish are almost always found in pairs although at times they may form shoals numbering many dozens.
