Description: One of the worse shipping accidents to have occurred in the northern Red Sea, was the sinking of the Salem Express on the night of the 15th December 1991. The car ferry was sailing from Jeddah bound for the Port of Safaga carrying Pilgrims returning from Mecca. Whilst getting close to her destination and during a severe storm, the ferry struck one of a number of coral banks that break the surface, to the south of the Hynderman group of reefs, tearing a hole in the forward hull and causing the bow door to break open. She sunk almost immediately and owing to the weather conditions no rescue teams were able to help. Officially there were 690 passengers on board, although it has been suggested that there may have been up to 1600. There were only 180 survivors.
This suitcase is one of hundreds of personal belongings still remaining around the wreck site and is a grim reminder of the number of lives that were lost that night.
