Description:
Red Galum Sea Anemone, Sanganeb Atoll, Sudan. Sanganeb atoll, located northeast of Port Sudan is widely regarded as being one of the finest reefs in the entire Red Sea. Rising up from a sea floor in excess of 2600 feet in depth (800 metres), this large reef is characterized by its very steep slopes on all sides with narrow plateauís on its upper parts. The rim of the atoll breaks the surface on all but the western side where it remains deeply submerged, giving access to a series of inner lagoons. With 86 species of hard coral having been recorded, Sanganeb is considered to have optimal conditions for coral growth, its highly diverse coral fauna perhaps reaching the maximum species diversity for any single location in the Red Sea. The south point is particularly rich in marine life owing to the northerly currents that prevail. As the currents swirl around and over the atoll, nutrients are collected and carried toward the south point, where corals of every form and description thrive together with sponges, gorgonians, sea ferns and clams. There are luxuriant gardens of anemones and rocky outcrops totally encrusted with soft corals of every colour. Fish fauna is also highly diverse with many larger pelagic species often present.
