Description: The Sinai Peninsula situated at the northernmost part of the Red Sea is a land of rocky, mountainous desert, made up by sedimentary rock in the north and granite in the southern part. The granite is frequently mixed with long, hard intrusions of basalt. Over time the granite has eroded faster than the basalt creating a spectacular mountain scenery with high ridges and deep gorges with extensive areas of sand dunes. In this image the arid mountains of the Sinai reach the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba. It is mid August and the dust filled air is at 50 degrees centigrade. |
