Precious Red Coral ( Corallium rubrum) Menorca, Mediterranean Sea. The Red Coral (Corallium rubrum) is a small gorgonian that colonizes shaded areas of rocky walls and overhangs at depths in excess of 30 metres and may even be found in the open at much greater depths where there is little light. It is a very beautiful species and for this reason has been extracted from the Mediterranean for the jewelry trade, to such an extent that it is now becoming scarce. |
