Description:
Purple stinger (Pelagia noctiluca) Mediterranean Sea. Small and very beautifully coloured jellyfish with tentacles reaching up to one metre in length. An offshore and oceanic species of all temperate and tropical seas. Will often come inshore either blown in by prevailing winds or being brought by currents. This jellyfish can deliver a potent sting which can be life threatening to small children or elderly people. Tentacles, oral lobes and even the bell are studded with millions of nematocysts. Have reached plague proportions in parts of the Mediterranean owing to over fishing of its predators such as turtles and sharks.
