Description:
Devonshire cup coral (Leptosamia pruvoti) Menorca, Balearic Islands. This bright yellow coral of the Dendrophyllidae family is very abundant in the Mediterranean Sea. Although of the same order (Scleractinia) as reef building corals this species is a solitary ahermatypic coral, that is to say that it is not dependant upon sunlight and symbiotic algae for the transfer of nutrients and therefore lives in dark or shaded areas, along drop offs, overhangs and on cave ceilings, from depths of between 5 and 50 metres.
