Description: Garajonay National Park, La Gomera, Canary Islands. Much of the central highlands of La Gomera island are covered in almost impenetrable “Laurisilva” or “Greenwood” forest. Also known as Laurel or bay-leaf tree forests they thrive in areas of constant moisture and temperature and are the last remaining sub tropical cloud forests on earth. Once widespread throughout the Mediterranean and North African regions millions of years ago, they now only exist in the western Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. This is the El Cedro forest, located within the Garajonay National Park on La Gomera island. |
