Description: La Gomera, Canary islands. La Gomera, situated very close to the west of the island Tenerife is one of the smallest of the Canary Islands, but is also one of the most scenically beautiful. A small shield volcano having emerged from the sea some 9.5 million years ago, not long after Tenerife, La Gomera is the only Canary island who’s volcanic activity soon fell silent never to erupt again and has been the subject of erosion for millions of years, thus forming its spectacular scenery. One of La Gomera’s most impressive sights is the El Cedro forest, located within the Garajonay National Park where an almost impenetrable “Laurisilva” or “Greenwood” forest covers much of the centre of the island. Also known as Laurel or bay-leaf tree forests they thrive in areas of constant moisture and temperature and are the last remaining sub tropical cloud forests on earth. Once widespread throughout the Mediterranean and North African regions millions of years ago, they now only exist in the western Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores.
