Description: The Barbary ground squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) was introduced to Fuerteventura from North Africa as a household pet in 1965. Having escaped they have thrived in a natural environment similar to their homeland. Without predators however, their numbers have increased to an estimated 300,000 and are now a threat to the island’s endemic species.
