Description:
Cladocora cespitosa. Menorca, Balearic islands. The Mediterranean Madrepora (Cladocora cespitosa) is the only hermatypic coral to be found in the Mediterranean sea. Hermatypic corals are those that contain symbiotic algae and contribute to reef building. Although this species does not build reefs, it is a member of the favidae family that is so important to the reefs of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. This coral builds colonies of up to 50 cm in size on rocks and in crevaces from 1 to 70 metres depth.
