Description: The Barranco de Valsendero is the continuation of of the Barranco de La Virgin, inland from the village of Valsendero, a canyon which cuts deep into the central highlands of Gran Canaria. This part of the island is that which receives the greatest precipitation, owing to the prevailing NE trade winds, which bring abundant moisture and cloud cover from the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this and in contrast to the dry, hot and arid south, this area is very green, with many woodlands and with a huge variety of vegetation. Here, within the canyon at over 2000 feet altitude, there are many species more often found at more northern latitudes; sweet chestnut, hazelnut, walnut, beech, oak, plum, apple, pear, eucalyptus, firs, blackberry and ferns, not to mention the myriad wild flowers in spring and early summer. |
