Description: View of the village of Lanzarote, located at 1000 metres above sea level, in the northern central highlands of Gran Canaria. This part of the island is that which receives the greatest precipitation, owing to the prevailing NE trade winds, which bring abundant moisture and cloud cover from the Atlantic Ocean. As a result of this and in contrast to the dry, hot and arid south, this area is very green, with many woodlands and with a huge variety of vegetation. Here there are many species more often found at more northern latitudes; sweet chestnut, hazelnut, apple, pear, eucalyptus, firs, blackberry and ferns, not to mention the myriad wild flowers in spring and early summer. The cloud cover brought ashore by the trade winds is known as the ‘sea of clouds’ and they are clearly visible in this image. |
