Description:
The pillow lavas located within the Barranco de Tamaraceite, near Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are today located at some 80 metres above sea level and are exceptionally well preserved. These lavas are 4 million years old and originate from the Roque Nublo volcano during an interglacial period when sea levels were much higher. They are composed of basanitic pahoehoe flows which ran for some 20 km down several paleocanyons before entering the sea and flowing some 3 Km out to sea along a shallow submarine platform. At the bottom of the image are rocks deposited by fluvial erosion, above these are the sandy deposits of the ancient shoreline, above which are the pillow lavas.
