Description:
Perhaps the most impressive of all the canyons of Gran Canaria is the Barranco de La Aldea. Originating as a number of steep tortuous ravines near to the town of Tejeda in the center of the island, the canyon runs in a westerly direction to the coastal town of San Nicolas de Tolentino. The canyon is incredibly deep and at some points very narrow with vertical walls rising almost 300 metres. This unspoilt wilderness is of exceptional beauty, with the only sounds being the winds blowing through the dry grasses and the “piuuuuh” of the Eurasian Buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum) which are relatively common here, often seen drifting high above the rocky ridges. Down inside the canyon the temperatures can soar to 40 degrees or more. This canyon, together with many others in the area, have been cut deep into the remains of the Miocene Caldera de Tejeda, formed some 14.1 million years ago. The canyons are the result of both continued erosion and volcanic activity, repeatedly carving out the rocks to form primitive paleo-canyons and refilling these during subsequent volcanic activity, time and time again over a time period lasting since around 12.5 million years ago. Finally, since there have been no volcanic eruptions in the southwest of Gran Canaria for over 3 million years now, the erosion has been the only factor involved, shaping this entire area into that of a very beautiful, rugged and mostly inaccessible landscape.
