Description: Los Tilos cloud forest, La Palma, Canary Islands. The Los Tilos forest situated on the steep slopes of the north east of La Palma island is densely covered in almost impenetrable “Laurisilva” or “Greenwood” forest. Also known as Laurel or bay-leaf tree forests, they thrive in areas of constant moisture and temperature and are the last remaining sub tropical cloud forests on earth. Once widespread throughout the Mediterranean and North African regions millions of years ago, they now only exist in the western Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores. |
