Close up image of the highly evolved alkaline hauyne-phonolite rock, which forms the western wall of La Calderilla phreatomagmatic maar, this being a pre-existing Roque Nublo lava flow that was broken through by the explosive eruptions. The rock is a microcrystaline porphyritic rock of a medium grey colour. The most abundant phenocrysts are those of the feldspathoid Hauyne and to a lesser degree there are large phenocrysts of Sanidine.(top right) The Hauyne is highly altered to a black colour and hardly recognisable. The chemical composition of this rock is unknown nor is its date, though it is known to correspond to the last of the Roque Nublo emissions. It is very similar to the hauyne-phonolite rocks of the Cruz de Saucillo, this rock however being of a darker grey colour and with larger hauyne phenocrysts. This lava may or may not be the same as those emitted from the Cruz de Saucillo, although this is unlikely since the Cruz de Saucillo lavas are at a slightly lower altitude. This lava flow may be the same as the hauyne-phonolites found at Pico de las Nieves. More research is needed. See Image of La Calderilla Maar in Post Roque Nublo section.
