Description: A large shark, measuring up to 320 cms, of the tropical Indo-Pacific commonly found inshore along the insular and continental shelves, from water barely deep enough to swim in to at least 70 metres depth. A nocturnal hunter, who is usually found resting in caves, crevices or on the bottom of lagoons during the day. Usually not aggressive but should be regarded with caution owing to its size. This shark was one of three very large nurse sharks to be seen the same day on a very remote reef in the eastern Indian Ocean, a reef who’s shark population had been decimated by both line fishing and dynamite fishing. Two of the sharks had fishing hooks embedded in their mouths. We returned the following day to find no sharks at all. |
