Description:
Sample of trachyte rock from a dike located within the Barranco de la Aldea, approximately 1 km below the Presa del Parralillo reservoir. This rock forms part of the Tejeda formation, a large intrusive complex of some 500 trachytic cone sheet dikes, hypabyssal syenite stocks and trachyphonolitic subordinate radial dikes that formed a 12 km diameter intrusive complex within the Miocene Caldera de Tejeda between 12.3 and 7.32 million years ago, intruding into the lavas and ignimbrites that had previously filled in this caldera. This rock is a trachyte and is of a medium purple-grey colour. The outer surfaces of these rocks are altered to shades of white, cream, tan and rusty brown colour, which gives the canyon lands of the Caldera de Tejeda area this distinctive warm golden appearance. The trachytic dikes show a variation of rock textures from aphanitic to porphyritic and to a lesser degree phaneritic. This rock sample is extremely fine grained (aphanitic) with few small tabular white or grey, alkali feldspar (anorthoclase) phenocrysts, and with iron oxide magnetite and titanium ilmenite.. Accessory minerals present (not visible) are biotite, apatite, amphibole and sphene. The matrix is essentially composed of microcrysts of alkali feldspar and sodic plagioclase, which present a typical trachytic texture in which the tabular feldspar microcrysts show parallel alignments. There are also iron oxides and titanium oxides. This image shows a rock sample with an oxidised outer surface. The orange colours are mostly iron oxides whereas the black stains are titanium oxides. Also visible are some anorthoclase phenocrysts.
