Description:
Close up image of highly altered alkaline olivine-pyroxene basalt from the bottom of the Barranco de Tirajana. This basalt is of the earliest formations (Guigui formation) of lavas to have formed the Miocene shield volcano that formed Gran Canaria and is somewhere around 14.3 – 14.5 million years old. It is classified as an olivine-pyroxene basalt and has abundant large olivine crystals which are altered to iddingsite. The few and small augite phenocrysts are hardly visible. The rock is a dark grey colour whose matrix is composed of small ribbons of plagioclase, tiny cristals of augite, opaques and scarce olivine. There is no chemical analysis available for this rock.
