Description:
Situated some 28 kilometres to the north east of Port Sudan, Sanganeb Atoll is widely regarded as being the best diving location in the entire red Sea, and perhaps one of the seven wonders of the world. Rising up from a sea floor in excess of 800 metres in depth, this vast reef is characterized by its steep slopes and vertical walls on all sides, with terraces or plateauís to the north and southern extremes. Measuring 6 kilometres north to south and 2 kilometres west to east, the rim of the atoll reaches the surface on all but the central western side, where it remains deeply submerged. Within the rim or barrier reef, there are three lagoons; a large central one with a maximum depth of 51 metres open to the sea in the west; a small one to the north with a depth of 27 metres and another small one to the south, close to the lighthouse with a depth of only 9 metres, which provides a safe anchorage for small boats. Unlike many Indo-Pacific atolls, Sanganeb has no islands or sandbanks, only the lighthouse, from where there are magnificent panoramic views of the turquoise blue reef and lagoon.
