Description: Grey reef shark (Carcharinus amblyrhynchos) western Pacific Ocean. A common coastal-pelagic shark frequenting the insular and continental shelves, from coral lagoons to deep offshore reefs of the central and western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean. Possibly also found around Madagascar and in the southern Indian Ocean and Indonesia. The Grey reef shark is sighted regularly by divers and swimmers and may usually ignore them unless stimulated by food when it will become aggressive.
If however it is encountered in areas that are rarely or have never been dived before or if spear fishing activities are taking place, the Grey reef shark will often behave very aggressively and has been responsible for numerous attacks on divers and spear fishermen. It is well known for its curious threat display just prior to an attack.
