Description:
Wreck of the Malakoff, Menorca, Balearic Islands. Wreck of the Malakoff, Menorca, Balearic Islands. The French registered 4500 tonne cargo steamer “Malakoff”, sank on the night of the 2nd of January 1929 after steaming head on into the coastline during a severe storm and was one of Menorca’s worst shipping accidents. The wreck is located at some 820 metres off the south west coast at a depth of 40 metres. Having been partially salvaged in 1954, she does not look much like a ship anymore, although much of her lower hull remains intact, from which hundreds of twisted metal ribs rise up into the water column attracting myriad shoals of fish. At 105 metres in length, the wreck of the Malakoff is a truly spectacular dive site, an artificial reef with an exceptional abundance of marine life. She is undoubtedly by far the most interesting dive site around Menorca and perhaps even in the whole western Mediterranean. With the plentiful supply of food, Barracuda (Sphyraena sphyraena) are permanent residents on this wreck, forming large shoals of many hundreds of individuals.
